Episode One
The Tardis Crew:
The First Doctor, Susan Foreman, Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton
Plot:
Two teachers (Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright) are intrigued by the behaviour of one of their students a girl called Susan Foreman. They follow her to her home, a junkyard located at 76 Totter’s Lane. Here they meet Susan’s grandfather (the Doctor) who has apparently locked Susan in an abandoned Police Box. When Ian and Barbara enter the Police Box to rescue Susan, they find themselves in a futuristic space-time machine known as the TARDIS. The Doctor and Susan are actually aliens who travel through time and space in the TARDIS. Susan begs the Doctor to let the two teachers go but he refuses and sets the TARDIS in flight. It lands on a barren landscape. A mysterious man-shaped shadow approaches the recently arrived ship.
Notes On Episode:
When we first see the TARDIS, it is located at 76 Totter’s Lane, the establishment of one I.M. Foreman. Considering how often the Doctor will go on to save the human race it is interesting to note that the junkyard’s proprietor can be read as I Am For Man!!!
Barbara has the most amazing hair-style. I expect many of her students would have been terrified of it.
Susan’s surname (Foreman) is the same as the name on the junkyard. Susan probably appropriated this name for the school records, unless the Doctor is actually I.M. Foreman himself?
Totters Lane appears next in the Sixth Doctor story Attack Of The Cybermen
Worthy Of The Diamond Logo?:
Quite simply, these are 25 of the most significant minutes in the history of television. Many of the basic elements that are still integral to Doctor Who are introduced here: The Doctor himself, the TARDIS in the shape of a Police Box and the use of companions. The episode is edgy and utilises techniques that would never be used again in the series original run. This is truly amazing stuff!

No surname is ever given on-screen for Polly although production notes have her listed as Polly Wright leading to much fan speculation that she might actually be Barbara’s younger sister. Considering her propensity for making tea, perhaps her full name is actually Polly Put The Kettle On.
